In today’s competitive education job search market, your cover letter plays a bigger role than ever in helping your prospective school district learn more about the value you bring to the table. Will you be the one that can help students experience success… will you be the one that will fit into the school community?
Far more than a simple document that tells the reader your resume is enclosed for his/her review, the teacher cover letter is a critical piece of the personal marketing puzzle. It is your opportunity to step back from the facts and figures of the resume and speak about your qualifications in a tangible, compelling, and conversational manner. Not only can you speak about the talents and attributes you offer, but you can also describe the motivations behind your career choice and what drives your motivation day in and day out. Most importantly, you can demonstrate the passion you have for the work you do (or, in the case of a career change, that which you are aspiring to do).
Why is this important? School districts want to get excited about the people they’re bringing onboard. Energizing your cover letter (and the entire presentation, really) with even the briefest of mentions on what compels you to aspire for excellence in your field is something your prospective employer will pick up on right away—it’s also something that many of your fellow teacher job seekers aren’t doing, so it gives you an extra edge!
For example, teachers may be driven by the desire to shape children’s minds and to change students’ view of the world as well as themselves. Clinical researchers may be driven by the desire to see state-of-the-art medical technologies put into use at hospitals for the benefit of patients. Aeronautical engineers may be driven to see their years of R&D put into a new device for the Space Shuttle.
Take a few minutes to read your cover letter. If it doesn’t effectively describe why you’re good at what you do and the passion you feel for your career choice, you may need our help.
